Tip 1: Graph to Check Algebraic Answers

When an algebra question asks you to find where a function equals a value or two functions intersect, don't solve it purely algebraically under time pressure. Instead, graph both sides of the equation and use the intersect feature.

Example: The SAT asks you to solve x² - 2x = x + 4. Enter Y1 = X²-2X and Y2 = X+4, press GRAPH, then use 2ND → TRACE → 5: intersect to find x = 4 and x = -1. Verify against the answer choices. Done.

Tip 2: Store Values to Avoid Re-Entry Errors

On SAT/ACT problems with messy decimals or square roots, compute the value once and store it: type the value, press STO→, then a letter key (A through Z), and press ENTER. Now reference that letter in subsequent calculations. This eliminates transcription errors that cost points.

For example: compute √(8) → STO→ → A → ENTER, then use A in formulas like 2A + A².

Tip 3: Use Tables to Check Plugging In

"Plugging in" is a powerful SAT strategy, you replace variables with numbers to test answer choices. The TI-84's TABLE function makes this even faster:

1. Enter your function in Y1.
2. Press 2ND → GRAPH (TABLE).

1. Enter data: STAT → 1: Edit → put x-values in L1, y-values in L2.
2. Run regression: STAT → CALC → 4: LinReg(ax+b) → ENTER.
3. Read off the slope (a), y-intercept (b), and r² value.

Tip 6: Verify Trig Values Instantly

Don't memorize the unit circle when the calculator can verify it in one second. If a question asks for sin(30°), just type it. Make sure you're in DEGREE mode first (MODE → Degree). This is also useful for inverse trig: find the angle whose sine is 0.5 using 2ND → SIN (sin⁻¹).
